"I hereby declare that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the word of God. This Sunday of the Word of God will thus be a fitting part of that time of the year when we are encouraged to strengthen our bonds with the Jewish people and to pray for Christian unity. This is more than a temporal coincidence: the celebration of the Sunday of the Word of God has ecumenical value, since the Scriptures point out, for those who listen, the path to authentic and firm unity.

The various communities will find their own ways to mark this Sunday with a certain solemnity. It is important, however, that in the Eucharistic celebration the sacred text be enthroned, in order to focus the attention of the assembly on the normative value of God’s word."

(Pope Francis, Aperuit Illis)

January 24th, the Sunday of the Word of God, will be celebrated for the second time. This year's theme is taken from the Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Philippess: Keep the Word of Life High! (Phil 2:16).

Pope Francis will preside over the Holy Eucharist at 10:00 a.m. from St. Peter's Basilica.

The event will be broadcast live on Rai1 and on all Catholic broadcasters around the world connected to the Dicastery for Communication and will be streamed on the Vatican News portal (
vaticannews.va).

As for the other initiatives of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, the pastoral aid in several languages is available on the
Dicastery's website (French Portuguese, English, Spanish, Italian).

The Sunday of the Word of God is a pastoral initiative of New Evangelization, with the aim of reviving the responsibility that believers have in the knowledge of Sacred Scripture and in keeping it alive through a work of permanent transmission and understanding, capable of giving meaning to the life of the Church in the different conditions in which it is found.
